SHIP’S SIGNAL CANNON RECREATION

Presented
is an exceptional cast
bronze cannon recreation of the type that was on the gun decks of British ship’s of the line during the time that Brittan
ruled the seas for the purpose of making signal. They were used to salute other vessels, to sound a mutiny, and it time of
fog.

This full size example has various marks of association with “HMS VICTORY” on the barrel which
are given below. The barrel has a rich dark patina that varies from dark brown
to light tan with some green overtones. There is a prominent touch hole just behind the third reinforcing ring. We believe
this cannon is similar to some found on the website, “Guns of America”, that come from South America and are price at $3500.00
and up.

HMS Victory was a First Rate Ship of the Line – mounting 104 guns on
3 gun decks. The upper gun deck has 12 pounder cannon, the middle gun deck 24 pounder guns and the massive 32 pounder cannon
are mounted on the lower gun deck. She was said to have carried two signal cannons of this design. The reason
was that the heavier weights lower down added stability to the ship.
The shipboard style wood carriage, is a recent creation, and its steel fittings with
banded wheels are of the period. A wooden ram rod is included. Inside the front of the cannon’s bore shows
an accumulation of rust and indicates a steel liner. Overall, the recently made tube has the characteristics
of cannons of this period and type which include:
        • Prominent cascabal knob
        • Reinforced chamber
        • Low line trunnions
        • Trunnion caps
        • Five reinforcing bands
        • Wood carriage
        • Aiming wedge

The lower location of the trunnions date the tube’s design to 1725. After 1725,
with the introduction of the Cronstedt system, the trunnions were located at the mid level of the inner chamber.
Before this, as with this gun, they had been placed at a lower level.

CONDITION: This recreation is professionally made
by a foundry in South America that specializes in period reproductions. It is equal in quality to the most expensive that
we have seen in cannons of this type. The aiming wedge rarely accompanies cannons.
The barrel
has a rich patina which varies from dark brown to tan with green over tones. The trunnions are cast as part of the barrel
at the lower section of the barrel.  There are various markings. There is evidence of iron rods cast into the
bronze which were used to hold a plug in place  for forming the bore when cast.
