Ca 1916

 Naval Observatory
Certification

and “Admiral’s” Stand

A rarely seen example of a very early Chelsea Navy Deck
Clock No. 2 with matching serial numbers and a 1916 date of manufacture. Available on Admiral’s stand as shown.

Presented

is a Chelsea U.S. Navy Deck
Clock No. 2, Serial Number 16316 in a heavy forged brass case with screw on bezel, mounted on an Chelsea Admiral’s
stand. Both are in original “mint” condition, but the stand is not as specified by the Navy .

This very early clock has a blackened brass
dial with acid etched Arabic numerals and inscriptions in silver. Under the hands is CHELSEA CLOCK COMPANY
* BOSTON, USA and then, “U.S. NAVY, DECK CLOCK NO. 2and
beneath, the highly sought after Naval Observatory inscription, a stylized “N” inside a circle and their serial number 1883.

The clock features large Arabic numerals with
moon style minute and hour hands, seconds bit above the 12 and early form  Fast/Slow adjustment lever. The classic 4
1/2 inch dial  with 8 day jeweled movement is housed within the original forged bronze case that
has a screw-on bezel measuring 5 1/4 inches in diameter. The precision, all jeweled movement and the case have
matching numbers, dating this clock to 1916. The Model K movement was fully serviced by its last owner, and is in
perfect running condition. Whomever buys this piece of maritime history and clock maker’s art will have one of the best
and rarest examples in existence.

Andrew Demeter, author of “Chelsea Clock Company,
The First Hundred Years,” 2001, Chelsea, Massachusetts, discusses in detail Navy Deck and Boat clocks beginning on page
210, and with a picture of this clock on the top of page 212.
