MODEL1841 SMOOTH BORE ROUGH   CASTING  - SIGNAL CANNON

 

 

Presented is a rough casting of a Mid 19th Century cast bronze signal cannon with reinforced chamber. It's design and proportions identify it as a reduced size Model 1841 six pounder that was prominently used during the Mexican War period, 1846-1848, and carried forward into the Civil War. Note that this cannon has never been finished. Work was started grinding down the casting marks, and drilling the touch hole, but was not completed. The casting obviously languished for years, and recently resurfaced.   CONDITION: The cannon is in a rough state. It is appealing in this condition or could be finished by someone competent. There are no mold marks or inscriptions. All were discontinued on the Model 1857 Napoleon that replaced the 6 and 12 pounders as the smoothbore of choice during the Civil War.
